About Laleli
Laleli is the oldest international wholesale district in modern Istanbul. The streets feel like an open-air bazaar: showrooms spill onto the pavement, Russian, Arabic, Persian and Turkish blend on the air, and freight forwarders pack containers in the narrow side streets. The district peaks around Eid and the Russian New Year.
History & heritage
Laleli boomed in the early 1990s when the collapse of the Soviet Union sent millions of suitcase traders to Istanbul for affordable, fashionable clothing. The Russian-Turkish trade gave birth to what is still called chelnoki, the suitcase trade, and built fortunes for Laleli families that now operate boutique export houses serving the same regions through modern wholesale channels.
