EU-Turkey Customs Union Duty-Free Trade
Under the EU-Turkey Customs Union (in force since 1996), most industrial products including apparel move duty-free between Turkey and Germany. A valid A.TR movement certificate accompanies the shipment, replacing tariff payment entirely on HS Chapter 61 and 62 items.
This represents a 12% landed-cost advantage versus China for the same garment, plus 4-6 week lead time savings. Germany alone imports 4.2 billion EUR of Turkish apparel annually, making it Turkey number one EU customer.
Hamburg Logistics Hub
Hamburg port is the default entry for German apparel imports from Turkey. Weekly direct sailings via Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk from Ambarli take 8-11 days transit. Bremerhaven offers similar capacity. Once cleared, autobahn distribution reaches Berlin, Munich and the Ruhr area within 24 hours.
Hamburg Free Port allows storage under bonded status if you need to delay duty/VAT payment, useful for buffer-stock strategies on hot-selling SKUs that need rapid replenishment.
LkSG Supply Chain Due Diligence Law
Germany Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz (Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, LkSG) took effect 2023. As of 2024, companies with 1,000+ employees must conduct risk analysis on direct suppliers, including overseas garment manufacturers.
Turkish factories increasingly hold amfori BSCI, SA8000, or WRAP certifications that satisfy German auditors. When briefing a Turkish supplier, ask for current audit reports during initial quote stage. Top suppliers in Merter and Bursa already provide LkSG-ready documentation packs.
German Buyer Profiles in Turkey
Three dominant German buyer segments source from Turkey: vertical retailers (Tchibo, Lidl, Aldi private labels) with mega-orders of 50,000+ pcs and full year contracts; mid-market chains (Peek & Cloppenburg, Galeria Karstadt) ordering 2,000-10,000 per style; and DTC brands (About You vendors, Zalando partners) running 500-2,000 piece drops.
Trade Fair Calendar for German Buyers
The most productive Turkish trade fairs for German buyers are: IFCO Istanbul (February and August) for fashion buyers; ITM Istanbul (June) for fabric and machinery; and Premiere Vision Istanbul (October) for premium textile sourcing. Lufthansa direct daily flights Berlin/Munich to Istanbul make 2-day trade fair trips practical.
